The Complex Structure of Infectious Diseases of the Modena University Hospital carries out an intense research activity in the clinical field, with important favorable repercussions on the welfare activity. The Clinic is listed among the Centers of Reference of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità for international and national clinical trials and is accredited as an ACTG center (AIDS Clinical Trial Group-USA) after evaluation by a commission of the National Institutes of Health-USA .

 

The Challenge

The Modena University Hospital aims to promote the development of a clinical trial on patients affected by Covid to describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics and therapies used up to now for SARS-CoV infection, using the data contained in hospital databases, radiological and laboratory databases.

For the development of this clinical trial, the University Hospital of Modena participated at the European call Data Partner Rapid Collaboration Call on COVID-19 “coordinated by the EHDEN Consortium (www.ehden.eu/open-calls/04-2020-covid19 -data-partner-call /).

The goal of the European call “Data Partner Rapid Collaboration Call on COVID-19” is to convert data on Covid patients contained in electronic medical records, registers and other data sources managed by European hospitals, according to the OMOP standard. -CDM ‘, creating an integrated structure of the collected data, facilitating their use for a variety of objectives, enhancing and accelerating research and decision-making in the health sector, achieving a global benefit.

 

The solution

DataRiver, thanks to the experience gained in the field of clinical data management, Big Data integration and analysis of clinical data through Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence algorithms, supported the University Hospital of Modena in the execution of the project, carrying out the activities of data cleaning, processing and mapping of data sources according to the OMOP Common Data Model format required by the project.

 

Results

The University Hospital of Modena has developed the SARS COV-2 EHDEN clinical study, funded by the EHDEN Consortium “Data Partner Rapid Collaboration Call on COVID-19”, obtaining information on patients affected by Covid collected on hospital electronic health records, databases of radiological tests and laboratory tests, to describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics and therapies used up to now for SARS-CoV-2 infection.
